Beginners...how to start playing
One of the most fundamental priorities of the WHGP is to ensure an ease of access to all, regardless of age, gender, class, ethnic origin or disability to play the game. Most golf clubs in Worcestershire and Herefordshire now have an open door policy to enable all to participate in the game in one form or another whether you hold a handicap or if you have never swung a club in your life before. All Club Professionals, Club Secretaries or Junior organisers have been briefed of the initiatives of the WHGP and all would welcome the opportunity to discuss how you could get into golf. Below we have listed the steps/options for various types of people to best get into the game:
- Juniors
- Enrol on a Tri Golf or Golf Extreme course at your school (a list of schools participating in these courses are listed in the Initiatives, others section)
- Go along to a local Sports Festival held at various locations throughout the year where Tri Golf will be on offer along from support from a PGA qualified coach. See the News or Initiative sections
- Call your local club professional or junior organiser of your local golf club and enrol to join group taster sessions which most clubs in the county offer. Enrol on a basic skills course such as National Skills Challenge www.getintogolf.org or YMG
- Go along to your local driving range and simply try and hit a few shots. The vendors often have clubs available to hire
- Call your local club or visit their web site (a list is available in our Links section) and see if and when they are holding there next Open Day or see our News section
- Go along to your local Municipal course and play a round of golf, no experience necessary (often the club professional will have clubs available for hire)
- Apply to your local club for membership (even if you've never played before most clubs will accept juniors at preferential rates to enable them to get started in the game)
- If you have friends that play at a club they can invite you to play with them as a guest at discounted rates
2. Ladies
- Go along to a local Sports Festival held at various locations throughout the year (ladies clubs will be available along with support from a PGA qualified coach. See the News or Initiative sections
- Call your local club professional or ladies club captain of your local golf club and enrol to join ladies group taster sessions which most clubs in the county offer at certain times
- Go along to your local driving range and simply try and hit a few shots. The vendors often have clubs available to hire
- Call your local club or visit their web site (a list is available in our Links section) and see if and when they are holding there next Open Day or see our News section
- Go along to your local Municipal course and play a round of golf, no experience necessary (often the club professional will have clubs available for hire)
- Apply to your local club for membership, call their ladies captain or the ladies county captain who will advise your best route or club (even if you've never played before some clubs will accept ladies at preferential scheme rates to enable them to get started in the game). 3. Men
